Pettition: Sanction individuals responsible for Sino-British Joint Declaration breaches
Scots may realise there are more Hongkongers in our community, most of which came from the UK government’s special visa scheme, which allows Hongkongers born in the British era and their dependents to work, study and stay here.
The reason behind such a visa scheme?
Beijing broke the Sino-British Joint Declaration, the agreement signed with Britain that guaranteed Hong Kong’s rights and freedoms remain unchanged under Chinese rule from 1997. Beijing enacted the National Security Law of Hong Kong, making it effective without giving the city’s legislature a chance to vote on the Bill. Since then, hundreds of pro-democracy lawmakers, activists and journalists were arrested, charged and denied bail for such a pure speech and thought crime we didn’t have under British rule. Other pro-democracy councillors (our directors included), lawmakers, campaigners and ordinary supporters flee to the UK and other parts of the free world for obvious reasons.
The UK is a signatory of the Joint Declaration, and the government already stated that Beijing breached it. However, there’s no further action other than the visa scheme. Hong Kong officials are able to visit this country while the Hong Kong government sanctioned at least 5 MPs, barring them from entering Hong Kong. Recently, the Hong Kong National Security Police put £100K bounties over eight pro-democracy activists in exile, including three residing in the UK. We launched a petition to call upon the UK government to sanction individuals responsible for Sino-British Joint Declaration breaches. We hope to get 100K signatures and put it for a debate at the Parliament.

What the petition has said
We call upon the UK Government to sanction any officials and civil servants who are engaging in actions which contribute to breaches of rights and freedoms guaranteed in the Sino-British Joint Declaration on Hong Kong, including those who order the arrest and prosecution pro-democracy activists and journalists.
As a signatory, the UK has to take responsibility to monitor China’s implementation. We want the UK Government to implement sanctions to pressure the Chinese regime not to undermine the rules of law, democracy and autonomy of Hong Kong and protect the interests of the British including British Nationals (Oversea) in Hong Kong.
